Tim Plumptre

The founder of Meta4 Consulting, Tim has served as CEO of two nonprofit organizations and is also the founder of the nonprofit Institute on Governance. His extensive career as a consultant in strategy, governance, evaluation and related fields has involved work with a wide range of nonprofit organizations both national and local, as well as numerous governmental and international organizations. His clients include organizations in many fields, including cultural affairs, economic development, retail management, health, community arts, international development, sports, law, child welfare, education, human rights, Indigenous affairs and others.

Recently, drawing on many interviews in Canada and the US as well as other research, Tim published a book entitled The Intrepid Nonprofit: Strategies for Success in Turbulent Times (available through this web site). It has received many positive reviews such as this one on Amazon: “this book is a goldmine of useful information for nonprofit organizations of any size… many practical takeaways. Will arm you with the confidence to embrace change, replacing trepidation with knowledge and useful, usable strategies that make a vital toolbox for success.”

An earlier book entitled Beyond the Bottom Line – Management in Government, provided an overview of the functions and traditions of democratic government. Greeted with enthusiasm by many civil servants who wanted to better understand the Canadian public service, the book sold over 5,000 copies in three months – a Canadian best seller.

Tim is an experienced public speaker and he is also a facilitator with a long experience in change management. He has demonstrated ability to help guide leaders with apparently divergent views or interests towards agreement on complex issues both in the sphere of strategy and in the field of governance.

As a volunteer, he has chaired the boards of the Children’s Aid Society and the Community Care Access Centre of Ottawa Carleton, as well as a palliative care hospice in Ottawa and a local community organization. He has served on a number of other nonprofit boards in the National Capital region. Currently he chairs the board of the Sylva Gelber Music Foundations which provides grants to young Canadian musicians on the doorstep of a professional career.

Earlier in his career, he was a journalist with the Globe and Mail, a Foreign Service officer, and an assistant to a federal cabinet minister. He was for many years a partner with the international consulting firm, William M. Mercer Ltd.

He is a Visiting Scholar at Massey College, University of Toronto and a former Adjunct Professor in the School of Graduate Studies at Carleton University and at Ottawa University. He has also been a member of the faculty of the Algonquin College Business School.
